We are told everyday that for better health we need more exercise. From Chinese culture, we get a low impact form of exercise called tai chi. This ancient martial art form dates from the 12th century. It combines slow and fluid movements with deep breathing and meditation. According to legend, the creator of tai chi developed it after watching several animals in conflict. He determined that the animals with smooth, slow and steady movements had the best defense.
While there are several forms of tai chi, many of the movements are named after animals or things in nature that describe the motions. White crane spreads it wings, parting the wild horse’s mane, wave hands as clouds, and green dragon goes out of the water are standard movements.
Often meeting in parks or community centers, tai chi groups thrive in Asian communities. Today these groups attract followers from every group of people who are interested in the health benefits of regular exercise. Check your community for tai chi practitioners. Always check with your doctor before beginning any new regimen of exercise.
